Flyers clinch fifteenth consecutive state championship
The pressure was on as the boys varsity tennis team geared up for their championship match on Wednesday morning. The Orono Red Riots were the only obstacle left in their quest for a record-breaking fifteenth consecutive Maine State Championship win, and the Flyers were hungry for success.
It was a little touch-and-go at the beginning, as Waynflete trailed Orono 2–1, but the Flyers rallied and won five games in a row. They finished with a 5–0 victory, securing their title as the Class C State champions and continuing their legacy as the most dominant team in Maine high school sports history.
Athletic Director Ross Burdick says, “I am so proud of our boys tennis team for their strong play and excellent sportsmanship. Winning the state championship and setting the Maine state record for consecutive championships is exciting for the current and former players. This success is a direct result of dedicated athletes, skilled coaches, and supportive parents.”
Congratulations, boys!
