Fall 2017 Sports Wrap-Up
The fall season was an exciting one for the Flyers. Boys and girls soccer made the state tournament and both cross-country teams qualified for the state meet. Field hockey completed the third season as a co-op with Maine Girls Academy. Boys cross-country was awarded the MPA Good Sportsmanship Award and Henry Spritz ’19 captured the Class C cross-country individual state championship.
Boys soccer had a final record of 10-4-2 and won the Western Maine Conference regular season class C championship. The Flyers did not lose a class C game until they fell to Maranacook in double overtime in the Class C semis. After close losses to Class B playoff squads Freeport, Cape, and York, the Flyers earned a home Class C quarterfinal against Mt. Abram. The Flyers topped the Roadrunners in overtime and advanced to the semis. The season came to an end at Maranacook with the double overtime 2-1 loss (the Black Bears went on to win the Class C state championship). All Conference first team honors went to seniors Ilyas Abdi and Christian Brooks, and sophomores Luca Antolini and Askar Houssein. Senior keeper Max Winson earned WMC honorable mention. Brooks and Abdi also made the Maine Soccer Coaches All-Star team.
Girls soccer had a final record of 6-7-2. Season highlights included a win over class B Wells, two wins over Old Orchard Beach, and two thrilling ties with Traip Academy. The team finished in fifth place in class C south and traveled to St. Dominic for the quarters. The Flyers fell to the Saints 3-2 to end the season. All Conference recognition went to seniors Ava Farrar and Lydia Giguere who made the first team. Farrar and Giguere also made the Maine Soccer Coaches All-star team. The Forecaster chose Farrar as their Female Athlete of the Fall.
Boys cross-country finished third at Regionals behind a first-place finish from Henry Spritz ’19. Levi Lilienthal (21st), John Veroneau (22nd), Connor Feeney (39th), and Henry Bukowski-Thall (51st) rounded out the top five. The Flyers again captured third by beating a Boothbay team that had beaten them in the Regionals. Henry Spritz captured the individual championship with a time of 17:01. Lilienthal was 29th and Veroneau was 32nd. Feeney was 58th and Bukowski-Thall was 59th. Spritz was chosen as The Forecaster’s Male Athlete of the Fall.
Girls cross-country finished 4th at Regionals behind strong finishes from Abby Pipkin (5th), Anna Wildes (10th), Leeza Kopaeva (20th), Ellie Simmons (34th), and Emily Wagg (41st). The girls placed 5th at the state meet. Pipkin was 18th, Wildes was 20th, Kopaeva was 29th, Simmons placed 52nd, and Hannah Babcock was 65th.
Field hockey scored 8 goals on the season and had several close games, ending the season with a record of 0-14. Sophomore Charlotte Dean had a solid year in goal. Three players were chosen to the all conference team including junior Gabby Eng to the second team. Eng also earned the Coaches Award. Freshmen Flyer players were Kaitlyn Bliss, Laura Martin, and Safa Hussein. Juniors were Eng and Sophia Street. Stella Lynch was the lone senior.
