A magical conclusion to the spring 2021 athletic season

After missing the spring 2020 season due to COVID-19, Waynflete teams took full advantage of a return to sports in 2021. All our MPA teams won at least one postseason contest and Waynflete track athletes impressed on the track. 

Boys Tennis had an amazing regular season, going 10-1 while splitting regular season contests with Class B state champion Yarmouth. The Flyers and Clippers were Western Maine Conference co-champions. Waynflete went on to win its 13th consecutive Class C state championship with a 5-0 win over George Stevens Academy. Ben Adey, Connor Feeney, Henry Kerr, Henry Hart, and Matt Adey were selected as All-Conference. Ben Adey reached the semi-finals of the state singles tournament, losing to the eventual champion. Henry Hart and Matt Adey won the WMC Doubles Championship over their teammates John Moon-Black and Henry Moore, who were runners-up. View the photos.

Girls lacrosse completed a 7-5 regular season which included thrilling wins over Lake Region and NYA. The Flyers earned the #3 seed in Class C South and beat Wells 11-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semis, the Flyers traveled to #2 seed Maranacook and prevailed 9-5. Waynflete took on #1 seed Freeport in the Class C state championship and won 9-8 in a thrilling back and forth contest! Boys Lacrosse had its best regular season in decades, going 11-1 with the one setback coming at the hands of Class A Berwick Academy. Highlights included wins over NYA, Greely, York, Yarmouth, and double overtime over Camden Hills. The Flyers dispatched Fryeburg 12-1 in the quarterfinals. Waynflete topped NYA convincingly in the semis by the score of 11-4. In the Class C state championship against Oak Hill/Lisbon/Monmouth, the Flyers dominated from start to finish and won their second championship in four years by a score of 17-5. Four Flyers were selected as First Team All-Conference: Harry Millspaugh, Sam Whipple, Ben Adey, and Jasper Curtis. Girls Tennis finished a tough WMC regular season 6-6 including multiple matches against top Class B teams Cape, Greely, and Yarmouth. The Flyers beat Boothbay 5-0 in the quarterfinal, then won a marathon semi-final match over Maranacook 3-2 that lasted 5 hours. Waynflete faced #1 seed Hall-Dale in the Class C South finals and fell 3-2 in an extremely close match that had several matches go to three sets and tie-breakers. Morgan Warner was chosen All-Conference First Team while Lucy Hart and Courtney Ford were selected to the second team. Warner had an incredible run in the state singles tournament, falling in the finals to the #1 seed.

The Baseball team completed the third year as a co-op with North Yarmouth Academy. The team had its best season ever in Class C—the regular season record of 11-5 was the best for both Waynflete and NYA since joining Class C more than 15 years ago. Baseball hosted its first playoff game in seven years, earning the #5 seed. In the first round against Mountain Valley, NYA/Waynflete exploded for two home runs and 13 runs in a 13-1 win. The team traveled to #1 seed Lisbon for the Class C South semis and fell in an exciting game 4-3. Senior Luke Josephson was chosen First Team All-Conference, serving as the team’s top pitcher and leading the team in hitting.

Waynflete had three outdoor track athletes this spring who practiced with Cheverus as cooperative individuals. Senior Levi Lilienthal ran the 1600 and the 3200 at the WMC championship and was named Runner of the Meet after winning both events. Bryan Stark-Chessa won the 800 meter dash and was also named First Team All-Conference. Senior Semma Twining competed in the 3200 during the regular season.

The Waynflete Crew team had no regattas in 2021 due to COVID. They did host a scrimmage race vs. Megunticook on the Fore River. 

The Waynflete Club Ultimate Frisbee team captured the Maine Ultimate Boys B Division championship. Congratulations to the Wombats!
