Visual Arts in the Upper School
The mission of the Visual Arts Department is to engender lifelong participation in the arts, to develop skills of perception and execution, and to create an appreciation for the craft and aesthetics of contemporary and historical cultures. Waynflete’s studio art classes allow students to problem-solve in an environment where there is more than one “correct” answer, and they provide a venue for nonverbal modes of expression where learning takes place using multiple intelligences.
Foundations of Art is a prerequisite for all other Upper School visual arts classes, as it provides a basic understanding of both two- and three-dimensional design principles while exposing students to a wide variety of media and processes. In addition, students learn visual arts vocabulary that is used throughout all the upper-level visual arts electives. After completing Foundations of Art, students may choose from more specific studio disciplines, which include drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, applied design, and book arts. Digital imaging is woven into several of these disciplines.

Students wishing to supplement their academic experiences (for an additional cost) may add enrichment music lessons and workshops on our campus.
