Night at the Museum
Over the past decade, Waynflete’s sixth-grade class has closed out the year with a culminating event—a museum that showcases student learning. This year’s museum focused on the theme of the Ancient World.
Students undertook individual research projects in their history classes that focused on topics related to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. After writing essays, students spent two weeks in Waynflete’s new Lower School Innovation Lab, transforming their learning into three-dimensional displays. Finally, the full group came together to practice presentations, rehearse Greek plays, and transform classrooms into this year’s big builds: a Roman aqueduct and an Egyptian tomb. At the end of the week, parents were on campus to watch dramatic performances in an outdoor theater, venture into the depths of Tutankhamen’s final resting place, pass beneath the arches of the aqueduct, and chat with Greek gods and goddesses. The week concluded with an overnight stay at the school—a “Night at the Museum.”
The effort to transform the Middle School into a museum reflects not only the students’ learning and growth, but also the community building that happens throughout the year.
