Spring Sports Varsity Wrap-Up 2018
It was a sensational spring for Flyers teams!
Five Waynflete athletes participated in spring track as cooperative individuals with Cheverus. Our athletes practiced with Cheverus and represented Waynflete at meets. All five competed in the Western Maine Conference championship at Lake Region. Abby Pipkin was the WMC Champion for Division II in the 800-meter run and second overall in the conference. She was recognized as First Team All-Conference. Abby was also honored as a senior scholar athlete. Patrick Shaw ’21 placed fifth in the 400-meter run and won his heat in the 100-meter dash. Helen Hornor set a PR in the 800 by nine seconds. Ellie Simmons set a PR in the 1600 by eight seconds. Pipkin qualified for the Class A state meet and competed in the 800 meter.
The baseball team finished the season with a record of one win and eleven losses. The highlight of the season was the win over NYA. After six innings, the Flyers and Panthers were tied. The Flyers were able to put three runs on the board in the seventh inning and hold on for the win. Max Winson was recognized as First Team All-Conference. Nick Hagler was honored as a WMC senior scholar athlete and also made Second Team All-Conference.
The rowing crew had an outstanding season. After moving the launch site from the Fore River Fields to Commercial Street, the program was able to hold daily practices regardless of tides. Having more time on the water paid dividends for the team. Waynflete won the Davison Cup in New Hampshire and dominated the Moose on the Malden regatta with eight first place medals, two second place, and one third place. Waynflete also had strong results in the annual Maine Youth Rowing Association regatta hosted by Merrymeeting in Brunswick. Waynflete boats captured five first place finishes out of twelve races.
Girls tennis had a terrific season. The program graduated six seniors in 2017 and veteran coach Linda Cohen was not sure if her team would have enough players to compete this spring. With the addition of some freshmen to the program, not only did the Flyers compete but they competed all the way to the Class C semi-finals. The team finished the regular season at 7-5 which included great wins over teams including York, Freeport, Yarmouth, and NYA. In the Class C quarterfinals, #5 Waynflete defeated #4 Winthrop 3-2 with Molly McNutt winning the pivotal match at #1 singles. For the semis, Waynflete traveled north to #1 Carrabec. The Cobras proved to have too much bite for the Flyers, winning 3-2. Molly McNutt was voted First Team All-Conference and the #1 doubles team of Chloe Fisher ’19 and Courtney Ford ’21 were voted All-Conference doubles. McNutt was honored as a WMC senior scholar-athlete.
Boys tennis had another outstanding season under veteran coach Jeff Madore. The Flyers completed the regular season undefeated at 12-0. This included two wins over perennial Class B powerhouse Cape Elizabeth. Freshmen Aidan Kieffer and Ben Adey won the WMC Doubles tournament. In the state singles, Thorne Kieffer make it to the quarterfinals and Jacob Greene made it to the semifinals. Lisbon fell to the Flyers 5-0 in the Class C quarterfinals. In the semis, the Flyers defeated Madison 5-0. At the Regional Finals at Bates, Waynflete dispatched Halldale 5-0. In the state championship, the Flyers defeated Mattanawcook Academy 5-0 to win their eleventh straight Class C state title. Thorne Kieffer ’19 and Jacob Greene ’18 were selected as First Team All-Conference. Nicholas Wagg ’18 was selected to the second team. Doubles All-stars were Shuhao Liu ’18, Kieffer ’21, and Adey ’21. Honorable mention doubles went to Chris Register ’19 and Cooper Sherman ’19. Wagg, Liu, and Owen Hoffsten ’18 were honored as WMC senior scholar-athletes.
Girls lacrosse had a strong season, completing a difficult regular season schedule with six wins and six losses. Four quality wins came over playoff teams including Class A Cheverus and Marshwood, Class B York, and Class C St Dominic Academy. #6 Waynflete earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs and traveled to Cumberland to take on #3 Greely in the quarterfinals. The Flyers fell to Greely 6-5. This was a fabulous effort by the Flyers, who came up just short of a trip to the semis. Seniors Izzy Burdick and Claire Dubois were honored as WMC senior scholar-athletes. Burdick and Kanha Stockford ’18 were named WMC First Team all stars. LZ Olney ’18 was named a WMC second team all star. Dubois and Laura Baginski ’18 received WMC Honorable Mention.
Girls lacrosse won the MPA Good Sportsmanship Award for 2018.
Boys lacrosse had an outstanding season under first-year head coach Parker Repko. The Flyers completed the regular season with an excellent record of eight wins and four losses. Three of the four losses came to top-ranked Class B teams Cape, Greely, and York. One season highlight was the thrilling 12-11 come-from-behind win over class A Deering. The Flyers trailed by four goals with four minutes left but roared back and pulled out the victory. Another highlight was the 12-11 overtime win over Class B power Yarmouth. Waynflete earned the #4 seed for the Class C tournament and took on #5 Oak Hill in the quarterfinals. The Flyers defeated Oak Hill 13-6.
In the semifinals, Waynflete traveled to #1 seed NYA and dispatched the hosts 18-6 to advance to the inaugural MPA Class C championship. In the championship game Waynflete defeated #2 seed Lincoln Academy behind seven goals each from Hank Duvall ‘18 and Miles Lipton ‘19 to capture the Flyers first state championship in the MPA era. Hank Duvall ’18, John Veroneau ’18, and Miles Lipton ’19 were chosen to the WMC first team. Duvall and Lipton were also honored as US Lacrosse All Americans. Mitchell Adams ’19 and Mykel Henry ’19 were chosen to the WMC second team. Goalie Will Armstrong ‘18 was chosen as WMC Honorable Mention.
